Arlington health officials said a large influx of migrant immigrants who recently moved to the county may be responsible for a particular strain of the bacteria that is highly drug-resistant.
The American Lung Association of Northern Virginia said the county had 22.2 tuberculosis cases per 100,000 residents, compared with 7.1 cases per 100,000 in neighboring Fairfax County.
Alexandria reports 19.8 cases per 100,000 residents.
Fairfax was the only jurisdiction in the region to show a slight decline in the number of tuberculosis cases during the past year.
Last year, Virginia's average number of cases was 7.4 per 100,000, up from 6.1 in 1991. - Associated Press
