HANOVER 911 FAILURE LEADS TO PROBE OF GTE

State regulators have ordered an investigation of GTE Virginia because of a series of telephone service problems, including a disruption in emergency 911 service for several hours in Hanover County.

Emergency 911 service was disrupted for six hours in a section of Hanover County on June 29. During that time, the family of a 71-year-old woman attempted to call for emergency service. She died before rescue workers arrived.

Hanover investigators said last week that the 911 disruption did not contribute to the woman's death. But county officials remain dissatisfied with the company's explanation.

GTE told the State Corporation Commission that the company had disconnected both 911 lines for the area because it mistakenly believed the numbers were available for new customers. - Associated Press
