LEXINGTON GOLFER FALLS IN SENIOR AM

Lexington's Blair Nicely lost his quarterfinal match Saturday during the 42nd Virginia Senior Men's Amateur golf championship at Golden Horseshoe in Williamsburg.

Nicely, who advanced with two victories Friday, was beaten by Wayne Jackson on the 20th hole of the match-play event.

Roanoke's two other qualifiers, Bill Shrader and Ned Baber dropped matches Saturday in the championship consolation flight. Shrader defeated Warnie Conley in the first round, then was beaten 1-up by Robert Lewis. Bill Chase was a 2-up winner over Baber in the first round.

In other regional sports news:

C.W. Cable of Oakton and Warsaw's Troy Thorne combined for a 6-0 shutout in the first round of the Carolinas/Virginias Junior team golf matches, helping the Virginias team take an 18-6 lead after the four-ball matches at Boonsboro Country Club in Lynchburg.

The margin is the largest after one round in the 11-year history of the tournament, which concludes today with eight singles matches.

Robby Rasmussen of Virginia Beach and Brad Carter of Ridgeway also recorded a shutout for the Virginias. Others scoring points for the team were: Chip Glover of Verona, Jimmy Forehand of Lynchburg, Mike Meade of Bluefield, W.Va., and Stephen Hund of Charlottesville.
