ROADWATCH

Highway and street projects scheduled this week by area and localities and the Virgina Department of Transportation:

ROANOKE

Fith Street bridge construction - A new four-lane bridge is being built between Salem and Gilmer avenues over Norfolk Southern tracks. Beginning Monday, the existing bridge will be closed for about eight months.

Elm Avenue (Virginia 24) bridge over 1-581 - Repairs under way at night and from 7 p.m. Fridays through 7 a.m. Mondays. During the work, one lane of traffic will remaing open in each direction. The job is estimated to last another month.

ROANOKE COUNTY

U.S. 11/460 bridge - At the Montgomery County line, the bridge over the Roanoke River and Norfolk Southern tracks will be under repair starting Monday. Two-way traffic will be maintained on the westbound lane while repairs are being performed on the eastbound side. Speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph. Vehicles wider than 9 feet are prohibited. Work to replace the bridge's deck will last until next spring.

Virginia 1290 (Crossbow Road) improvements - Drainage improvements and a new surface overlay will be applied on Wednesday, weather permitting. Detour signs will be posted around the work area. In the event of inclement weather, work will be rescheduled for the next week.

BOTETOURT COUNTY

Interstate 81 Pavement Repair - Sections of concrete pavement are being reparaired between exits 150 and 156, mostly in the southbound lanes. Lanes will be closed from Monday mornings to noon Fridays. Work will continue for another month.

BEDFORD

Virginia 122 reconstruction - About .4 mile of Virginia 122 is being rebuilt, from .5 mile north of the intersection of Orange Street to Longwood Avenue. The new road will be paved with asphalt concrete, and the project includes new traffic signals. Work will continue through the end of the year.
