LYNCHBURG GOLFER WINS AT SENIOR AM

Lynchburg's Jim Alexander defated Bob Moyers of New Market 4 and 3 on Sunday to win the top flight at the Virginia Senior Amateur Championship at Golden Horseshoe Golf Course in Williamsburg.

Tommy Baker of Lexington won the seventh-flight final, defeating Bo O'Connor of Covington 4 and 3.

In other finals involving area golfers: Richard Wrenn defeated Reginald Clark of Floyd 3 and 2 in the second flight; Edward Darling beat John Rice of Salem 1-up in the fourth flight; Harold Coates defeated Ron Webster of Roanoke 4 and 2 in the ninth flight; and Forest Palmer beat Bill Haupt of Salem 6 and 5 in the 10th flight.

In other sports in the region:

The Virginias team parlayed a strong first-day performance into a 29-19 victory Sunday in the 11th annual Carolinas/Virginias Junior Team golf matches at Boonsboro Country Club in Lynchburg.

The host team held an insurmountable 18-6 advantage going into Sunday's four-ball matches. Brad Carter of Ridgeway led the way Sunday, taking all three possible points from Steven Welch of Bishopville, S.C.

The Virginias team has won three of the past four events played in Virginia.

Ron Glowczynski, riding for East Coasters Cycling and Fitness, overcame chain problems to finish eighth Sunday at the Massanutten Hoo-Ha Mountain Bike Race in Harrisonburg. Teammate Charles Stanley ran as high as third in the field of 150 riders before fading to 19th with mechanical problems.
