Larry Hawkins, 43, apparently lost his footing while sightseeing at the Crescent Rock Overlook, said Shenandoah National Park spokesman Robbie Brockwehl.
Witnesses said Hawkins, who was with five other people, fell about 3:45 p.m., Brockwehl said. By the time two park rangers reached him a few minutes later, he was not breathing and had no pulse.
Brockwehl said she didn't know where Hawkins was standing before he fell. But she said most overlooks in the park have some type of stone wall between drop-offs and viewing areas. - Associated Press
