BIG BRIERY BASS IS TITLE WINNER

Michael Bennett of Mechanicsville caught an 11.55-pound largemouth bass from Briery Creek Lake to win the Virginia state title in the 1994 Goodyear/Bassin Big Bass World Championship.

Entering the largest bass from the state earned him a free trip to compete in the BBWC tournament for prizes that total $250,000. That tournament will be held Sept. 24-25 at Percy Priest Lake near Nashville.

For the first time, a woman will fish in the championship. Shri Stroud caught a 9.7-pound bass from a private pond, earning her the right to represent Kansas at the tournament.

The angler who catches the heaviest bass during the tournament wins $200,000 plus a boat motor and pickup truck.

Located near Farmville, 845-acre Briery Creek lake is a state-owned impoundment that has been heavily stocked with Florida bass.
