Shirley, 17, shot a first-round 7-over-par 80 Tuesday at Fredericksburg Country Club, leaving her eight shots off the pace heading into today's final round of the 36-hole tournament.
Anne Cardea, 15, of Midlothian is leading at 72. Karla Roberson of Chesapeake is second at 75, and Gretna's Shelley Scruggs shot a 78. Danville's Danielle Ware is tied with Shirley for fourth at 80.
Shirley and Floyd's Susan Slaughter (1985-87) are the only players to win the overall title three years in succession.

Roanoker Mike Smith, who recently qualified for the 93rd U.S. Amateur to be played next week in Houston, shot a 1-over-par 72 Monday to win a spot in the 13th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
Smith won the only available berth in the Virginia-zone qualifier at Meadowbrook Country Club in Richmond. Nineteen players attempted to qualify.
The Mid-Amateur, for players 25 and older, will be played Sept. 18-23 at Eugene (Ore.) Country Club.
Wes Martin of Blacksburg High School shot a 79 at the par-70 Round Meadow Country Club in the last of the New River District's mini-tournaments, leading the Indians to the overall victory. Blacksburg earned the automatic bid to the regionals at Tazewell in October. Blacksburg finished with 350, Christiansburg 380, Carroll County 399 and Radford 412.
