Sudan was placed on the State Department list of countries designated as supporters of international terrorism, disqualifying the country for all U.S. assistance except for $71 million in humanitarian aid.
The State Department did not release the amount of aid which would be denied under the sanctions, but it was thought to be negligible.
The designation also requires the United States to oppose Sudanese requests for aid from international lending institutions like the World Bank or International Monetary Fund.
State Department spokesman Mike McCurry said, "The evidence currently available indicates that Sudan allows the use of its territory as sanctuary for terrorists, including the Abu Nidal organization and members of Hezbollah and Palestine Islamic Jihad.
In addition, U.S. officials believe reports that militant extremists have been trained in Sudan and committed acts of terrorism in neighboring countries, McCurry said. - Associated Press
