The Generals earlier lost All-ODAC wide receiver William Propst and tailback Michael MacLane, both of whom would have been juniors. Propst reportedly will return to school, but MacLane has transferred to Georgia.
"I've talked to them and these are three very isolated situations," said Steiner, who said he has not looked past the 1993-94 school year. "There's no conspiracy of any kind. I've got a lot of reasons; most of all, I don't want there to be any bad feelings with the team.
"I've played football for a long time. I think I've played sometimes for other people and not for myself. I've been talked into playing. I had some success, so I kept doing it. [Burnout] is probably the best way to put it."
Steiner intends to play baseball for the Generals in the spring. He was a second baseman this year in his first season on the squad.
In other college news:
Three young defenders stood out Wednesday night during Virginia Tech's first football scrimmage of the season.
Torrian Gray, a redshirt freshman from Lakeland, Fla., had five tackles from his rover spot; cornerback Larry Green, a freshman from Port St. Lucie, Fla., had an interception and a tackle; and junior linebacker Andy Miller from Virginia Beach had an interception and two tackles.
"I was really pleased with the way the defense was flying around the football," coach Frank Beamer said. "It was a good start for a lot of our young players."
The Hokies open the season Sept. 4 with a home game against Bowling Green.
Carol Alfano, the Virginia Tech women's basketball coach, signed a four-year contract Wednesday that includes a raise, she said.
The 44-year-old coach's base salary will increase $5,000 to $55,000 this year, and the contract calls for a 5 percent raise in each of the following three seasons. That may change, however, depending on how Tech responds to gender-equity issues.
"It'll be different at the end of four years. I think it'll be re-evaluated before it's all said and done," Alfano said. "I'm comfortable with it at this point in time."
Alfano's top two assistants have received promotions. Bonnie Henrickson, a native of Wilmer, Minn., is now associate head coach and has increased administrative responsibilities. Beth Dunkenberger, a Shawsville High School graduate, is recruiting coordinator.
Virginia was a near-unanimous No. 1 choice in the ACC men's soccer coaches' preseason poll. The Cavaliers, two-time defending NCAA champions, received six of seven first-place votes and 47 points. Duke, which received the other first-place vote, had 43 points. The Blue Devils were followed by North Carolina State (31 votes), Clemson (30), North Carolina (20), Wake Forest (16) and Maryland (9).
UVa was fourth in the ACC women's soccer preseason poll. North Carolina led the way with all five first-place votes and 25 points. The Tar Heels were followed by N.C. State (16 points), Duke (15), UVa (13) and Maryland (six).
