Shirley, seeking to become the first player to win four consecutive state titles, fired the day's best round of 76. Her 36-hole total of 156 left her six shots behind Cardea, 15, who shot 72-78.
Shirley, 17, finished in a second-place tie with Chesapeake's Karla Roberson, who won the 16-17 age group title when she birdied the first hole of a playoff.

K.J. Hippensteel of Roanoke pulled a doubleheader sweep, winning the boys' 14-and-under and 16-and-under singles championships at the Greater Baltimore Challenge tennis tournament.
Hippensteel, 13, beat Matt Hanna 6-4, 6-4 in the 14-and-under title match. He beat Scott Akerman 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 4-1, retired in the 16-and-under final.
Dell Curry of Virginia Tech and the Charlotte Hornets will be the featured speaker Sept. 2 at the first meeting of the new Roanoke Valley Sports Club.
Dan Wooldridge, president of the Sports Club, said Curry intends to bring two of his NBA teammates to the program, which begins at 6:30 p.m. with a social. Dinner starts at 7 p.m.
Admission to the meeting is $10 for the club's more than 250 members, Wooldridge said. Guests will pay $15.
