HOMER PROPELS BUCS

Center fielder Ramon Espinosa hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning Wednesday night as the Salem Buccaneers earned an 8-4 Carolina League victory over the Winston-Salem Spirits.

It was Espinosa's sixth homer since joining Salem on July 2.

Winston-Salem took the lead in the first inning when Bubba Smith drove in Cleveland Ladell. Buccaneer Jeff Conger saved a home run when he leaped above the left-field wall to catch a fly ball hit by Tim Belk.

Salem tied the score in the third when Conger reached on an error. Conger stole second and scored when Kevin Polcovich hit a double down the left-field line.

The Buccaneers took the lead for good in the fourth inning. With one out, David Tuttle (5-6) walked Joe Ronca and Trace Ragland. Espinosa singled to right to score Ronca and Ragland scored on an error.

Salem chased Tuttle in the fifth inning. Conger led off with a single to right-center field. John Farrell walked with one out and Mike Brown singled to left to load the bases. Ronca singled to score Conger and Farrell.

Jim Nix replaced Tuttle and struck out Ragland but gave up the three-run homer to Espinosa as Salem took an 8-1 lead.

\ BUCSHOTS: Bubba Smith and Bobby Perna each hit solo home runs as the Spirits defeated Salem 8-5 Tuesday night. Smith's homer was his 22nd of the year. . . . Dan Jones gave up 10 hits and six runs in 5 2/3 innings for the Bucs. . . . Salem shortstop Kevin Polcovich went 3-for-5 with an RBI.
