The damage estimate for Accomack and Northampton counties brings the drought's statewide toll to more than $42 million.
Extension Agent James Belote of Accomack County estimated damage there at $8.1 million. Agent J. Fred Diem of Northampton County projected a $7 million loss.
The two-county Food and Agriculture Council sent its request for federal drought relief to the counties' boards of supervisors, which will vote on whether to pass the requests on to Gov. Douglas Wilder.
A federal disaster declaration would make farmers eligible for low-interest loans.
