THE ISRAELIS' CIVILIZED CONCERN

AFTER SEEING your editorial-page cartoon by Benson on Aug. 9, I was absolutely appalled. The one-sided message is unacceptable.

The Israelis have responded to terrorist attacks by fundamentalist Moslems on peaceful farm settlements. Benson prefers to lose sight of the fact that the Israelis warned the civilian Lebanese population before responding. Civilians had ample time to leave. In contrast, the fundamentalist Hezbeollah have attacked Israelis without warning and the missiles they have used are not so unsophisticated as Benson seeks to imply. Israelis should be lauded for their civilized concern about hurting noncombatant innocents. This has tempered their obligatory response aimed at protecting their own civilian population.

Has any Western power, including the United States, shown a similar human concern about hitting civilians in the Middle East, Yugoslavia or elsewhere? Unfortunately not!
