WASHINGTON - William Daley has helped his brother get elected mayor of Chicago and Bill Clinton become president of the United States. Thursday, he took on what may be his toughest campaign yet - winning congressional approval of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
At the White House Thursday, Clinton introduced the 45-year-old Chicago lawyer as head of the administration's new NAFTA task force. Daley's job will be to recruit "prominent Republicans, Democrats and independents who have a common interest in promoting the NAFTA and what it can do for our economy," Clinton said, then to coordinate a campaign to sell NAFTA to Congress and the public. - Washington Post
Japan to deregulate, reform its economy
TOKYO - The new Japanese government said Thursday it will deregulate the economy and enact administrative reforms under a plan expected by mid-September.
This plan would include a list of deregulation targets, with priority given to areas that provide the quickest currency and import-related returns to the Japanese public in the form of lower prices.
Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa and his economic ministers met for an hour; the meeting had been called to discuss broad economic policy.
The government said by late September it will unveil a package of measures to ease government control over business. Japanese bureaucrats wield substantial influence over the domestic economy through financial incentives, industry regulation and informal agreements with companies known as "administrative guidance." - Journal of Commerce
