DEFICIT BEHIND 1992'S, DESPITE NEW NUMBERS

A calendar quirk inflated the budget deficit in July to $39.6 billion but red ink for the fiscal year still is running behind last year's record, the Treasury Department said Friday.

The cumulative budget deficit for the first 10 months of fiscal year 1993, which began Oct. 1, totaled $240.2 billion, compared with $270.9 billion for the same period a year ago.

The Office of Management and Budget is projecting a deficit for the full fiscal year of $285 billion - short of last year's record $290.2 billion. Private economists generally are expecting a deficit in the range of $270 billion to $280 billion.
