SPORTS CLUB HAS MAST AS SPEAKER

The Roanoke Valley Sports Club has filled a void on its schedule of dinner speakers created when NASCAR star Davey Allison died in July.

Rick Mast, the Winston Cup driver from Rockbridge County, will replace Allison as guest speaker at the sports club's NASCAR program on Sept. 22, club vice president Charlie Moir said.

Also appearing on the program will be NASCAR driver Jimmy Hensley of Horsepasture and Stuart's Eddie Wood, crew chief of the Wood Brothers team. Moir said all three will sign autographs.

The club's first program is Sept. 2 at the Salem Civic Center, with Charlotte Hornets guard Dell Curry as the guest speaker.

Chris Swanenburg, who played goalie on Yale teams that won the Ivy League championship from 1988-90, is the new lacrosse coach at Radford University.

Swanenburg, a 25-year-old native of Monkton, Md., has been head coach for the past three years at Goucher College in Towson, Md., where he started the men's program. He also has been an instructor at numerous summer camps.

Swanenburg succeeds Steve Billings, a former Radford player who resigned this summer.

"I can't wait to get started," Swanenburg said. "I'm really looking forward to the challenge of helping Radford build a competitive lacrosse program."

A "powder puff" race featuring all female drivers highlights the action tonight at Franklin County Speedway as the racers enter the final third of the season.

The Aug. 14 races featured three first-time winners for 1993: Lonnie Foley in Street Stock, Mike Owens in Pure Stock and Jimmy Wilson in the Rookie class.

In addition to the powder puff, Street Stock, Pure Stock and Rookie classes, there will be racing tonight in the Late Model (100 laps), Mini Stock, Any Car and Modified divisions.

Gates open at noon, qualifying starts at 6 p.m. and the first race begins at 8 p.m. Admission is $5 and children under 10 are admitted free.

The Roanoke Hot Shots won their opening round-robin match 4-1 over Richmond No. 2 in the USTA Women's 4.0 sectional tournament at the Wintergreen resort.

Sue Colbourne and Page Griffin won singles matches for Roanoke, and the teams of Donna Mills and Winnie Barham and Eva Guertler and Kathy O'Keffe won doubles matches.

Two teams from Virginia and one each from Maryland and Washington make up the round-robin field. The Hot Shots complete round-robin play with matches today and Sunday.

The Roanoke men's team also won its match Friday in the USTA 3.5 sectional tournament at Wintergreen.

Roanoke took two of three doubles matches to edge Washington, D.C., 3-2. Ray Lingle and Joe Wheby won 6-4, 5-7, 6-0 at second doubles, and Clay Agee and Dan Cullather were 6-4, 6-2 winners at third doubles. Randy Cargill's 6-1, 6-2 victory at second singles gave Roanoke its other point.

The Roanoke men advance to play Virginia Beach at 2:30 p.m. today.
