MUNOZ RETIRES FROM NFL

Anthony Munoz, forced out of the NFL by nagging injuries last season, retired again Sunday when tests revealed he has a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder.

Munoz, regarded as perhaps the finest offensive tackle in league history, was injured Saturday when he tried to make a tackle after a fumble during the first quarter of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 32-12 preseason victory over Buffalo.

X-rays taken at the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando were negative, but additional tests performed Sunday confirmed a career-ending tear that will require surgery.

"We've lost one tremendous player," Bucs coach Sam Wyche said. "His next stop is the Hall of Fame."

Munoz, who turned 35 on Thursday, retired last season after 13 years with the Cincinnati Bengals. Tampa Bay lured him out of retirement this spring, hoping his experience and leadership would help stabilize its offensive line.

Munoz was selected to the Pro Bowl for 11 consecutive seasons from 1981 to 1991.

"It's difficult and frustrating, but I'm at peace because I know that I worked hard to make this comeback," said Munoz, who was accompanied by his wife, De De, to an afternoon meeting with Wyche.

"I gave it my all in camp. I'm at a point in my life where it is easier to handle things like this. We had a good meeting with Sam and we still want to be involved with the team in some capacity."
