The company in July 1992 announced plans to build a 26,000-square-foot administrative building on Fallowater Lane near Tanglewood Mall. Cox bought the five-acre site for about $100,000 an acre last summer.
The two-story building, scheduled for completion by August 1994, will include a 1,200-square-foot studio attached to the main building. The studio will be used to produce programming and will have room for an audience, said General Manager Gretchen Shine. Cox will survey customers to find out what they want to see, she said.
Bill Sledd, marketing manager for Cox, said other cable companies have local talk shows that could be adapted for Roanoke.
It's an opportunity to get information to the community and increase awareness of area organizations, Shine said.
Contractor J.M. Turner & Co will build the office, which was designed by the Roanoke architectural firm Hayes, Seay, Mattern and Mattern Inc.
The company's satellite receiving equipment and central transmission facility will remain at its present site behind its offices on Salem Avenue near downtown Roanoke.
The old office building probably will be sold, said the company's controller, Phil Ahlschlager.
