About 1,000 employees are expected to accept the offer, and they are likely to be scattered nationwide, said Bill Berry, a spokesman at Delta's headquarters in Atlanta. "It would be nationwide with a bigger concentration in hub cities."
Since it began tightening its belt in May 1992, Delta has eliminated 6,200 jobs, or 7.7 percent of its staff. The carrier has a goal of cutting 8,000 jobs, or 10 percent of its worldwide work force of 80,000.
During the past year, Delta has laid off several thousand part-time employees, imposed a hiring freeze, reduced some wages and allowed its staff to shrink through attrition, Berry said. The airline plans to lay off 250 pilots by Oct. 1, and another 350 pilots also might be laid off, Berry said.
Monday's offer targets non-union employees in overstaffed departments, such as customer service and computers, Berry said. - Orlando Sentinel
