QUARRY ACCIDENT LEAVES 20,000 WITHOUT POWER

An accident at a quarry Monday afternoon severed a transmission line, leaving more than 20,000 customers in the Culpeper area without power.

Virginia Power spokesman Ray Hugo said the transmission line was cut by a piece of equipment at the Martin Marietta Aggregates quarry around 3 p.m.

Hugo said the utility was able to restore power to some customers by 5 p.m. with final repairs expected to be finished by midnight.

The break in the transmission line knocked out a Rappahannock Electric Cooperative substation that provides power to customers in Culpeper, Madison, Orange, Rappahannock, Louisa, Spotsylvania and Louisa counties.

Fred Harris, quarry manager, said a machine used to haul stone severed the power line. Harris said the incident is under investigation.
