Amtrak, facing the threat of a nationwide walkout at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, said Monday it is prepared to enter federal court to obtain a restraining order against the United Transportation Union.
Amtrak said it thought the U.S. District Court would respond favorably and "prevent an illegal strike."
The UTU, representing 2,300 Amtrak conductors, yard workers and station workers, is angered over Amtrak's use of maintenance personnel to move Metrolink commuter cars in the Taylor railyard in Los Angeles. Metrolink is the 10-month-old Southern California commuter rail service run by Amtrak for Cal-Trans, the state's transportation department.

Hartford, Conn.-based United Technologies Corp. agreed Monday to pay $5.3 million to settle widespread environmental violations and to submit to an environmental audit of its operations. The settlement with the Environmental Protection Agency covers violations at 10 facilities in Connecticut in the late 1980s and early 1990s. - Boston Globe
