TECH SECOND IN VOLLEYBALL POLL

Virginia Tech, co-winner of the Metro Conference's regular season volleyball title last year, was picked second in the league's preseason coaches poll.

Louisville was the top vote-getter with 45, followed by Tech with 39, Tulane with 36 and South Florida with 32. Virginia Commonwealth placed fifth with 14 points and UNC Charlotte and Southern Mississippi tied for sixth with 13.

Tech opens its season Sept. 1 with a home match against Liberty at 7 p.m.

Ryan Ketron of William Byrd is bidding to become the first two-time winner of the Bob McLelland Metro golf tournament starting today at Countryside.

The Terriers, defending team champions, are expected to receive their biggest challenge from Northside and Glenvar.

Roanoke Valley Christian replaces James River in the 36-hole event.

Chip Sullivan, a teaching professional at Hanging Rock Golf Club in Salem, shot a 68 Monday to take the first-round lead at the Middle Atlantic PGA Section Championship at Two Rivers Country Club in Williamsburg.

Salem's Moyer Sports Complex will be the site of the National Softball Association Men's Class C Fast Pitch World Series this weekend.

Play begins Friday after opening ceremonies at 6:30 p.m. Forty-two teams from 12 states are entered. Public admission is $2 for a daily pass or $4 for a ticket good for all games. Children under age 12 will be admitted free.
