EXTENSION CORD BLAMED FOR HOUSE FIRE

An faulty extension cord leading to an air conditioner is being blamed for a Wednesday afternoon house fire in Northwest Roanoke.

It took about a dozen firefighters about 15 minutes to douse the 2:15 p.m. blaze in the 600 block of 36th Street Northwest.

A sitting room in an upper apartment in the two-story stucco house was engulfed when firefighters arrived. The blaze was fueled by furniture that included two couches.

No one was home at the time of the blaze, which filled the house with smoke.

Authorities estimate the fire did $20,000 damage to the structure and an additional $10,000 damage to the house's contents.
