Thomas is president of the Friends of the Salem library, the organization that has promoted a book sale since 1988, the year the group was organized.
The book sale is the major money-raising project of the Friends group, Thomas said. Last year it raised more than $1,000.
The group also gets a large portion of its money through donations.
Thomas said books offered in the sale are not surplus or rejects from the library but are books donated by people in the community.
"We urge people to go through their book collections now and take out the ones they no longer want," she said.
She hopes that people give their discarded books to the Friends group for the library book sale.
Books to be donated can be left at the library on Main Street in downtown Salem.
Money from the book sale is used to help the library acquire equipment not provided for in its budget.
Over the years, Thomas said, items obtained by the group include a film projector, a TV set, a computer work station, a video player, typewriters, a display case and a sound system.
The group also provides some of the money for the library's summer reading program.
Members of the group also helped persuade local government officials to provide funds to expand the library several years ago, Thomas said.
