Roanoke-area residents pass recent CPA exam

The names of the Roanoke Valley residents who took the Uniform Certified Public Accountant examination in May and passed have been announced.

Three win in museum's amateur photo contest

The Virginia Museum of Transportation Inc. has announced the winners in its first amateur photo contest, sponsored by First Virginia Bank.

The winners of each category are: Robin Shavers of Richmond, steam engines and diesel engines; Al Wekelo of Richmond, passenger stations; and John McAllister, Lynchburg, scenic locations.

All entries were photographs of Virginia trains or Virginia train-related subjects and were judged on originality and creativity. The winning photographs will on display through Oct. 30 at the museum at 303 Norfolk Ave. S.W.

Volunteers needed to help plan festival

Volunteers are needed for various positions in planning and implementation of Roanoke's Festival in the Park.

Some areas needing volunteers are performing arts, logistics, concessions, children's activities and fund raising.

Author to discuss business of writing

Cary Cohen, who has authored nine books dealing with business management and marketing, will present "Writing Can Be Fun and Profitable" at the Valley Writers' Sept. 2 meeting at the Elm Park Estates near Tanglewood.

Cohen, a consultant with a Richmond firm, also has had several articles published in trade and professional journals.

Red Cross announces new hours for donors

The Roanoke chapter of the American Red Cross has announced new, hours for donors.

The blood center, 325 Church Ave., will now be open on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.; on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.; and on Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Area agency on aging announces new name

The board of directors of the League of Older Americans Inc. has announced that the agency will be known as LOA Area Agency on Aging effective immediately.

The location, mailing address and telephone number have not changed.
