Lt. Gov. Donald Beyer has been elected to the board of directors of First Union National Bank of Virginia, based in Roanoke. Beyer, who owns a Volvo dealership in Falls Church, heads a state commission on poverty and welfare reform and was chairman of the Virginia Economic Recovery Commission in 1991.

\ Richfood Holdings Inc., a Richmond-based food wholesaler and distributor, on Thursday declared a 2-for-1 split of its common stock. The additional shares will be distributed on Sept. 30 to shareholders on Sept. 15. At the same meeting, Richfood's Board of Directors declared a cash dividend of 4 cents per old share, payable Sept. 30 to shareholders on Sept. 15.

\ Cox Cable Roanoke has won a "top mark" award from the Cable Television Administration and Marketing Society for its billboard promoting The Learning Channel. The billboard, created by The Packett Group of Roanoke, topped the outdoor-transit category in a nationwide field of nearly 1,500 entries. The message read: "And no more homework until you finish your TV."

\ Anderson & Associates Inc., a Blacksburg engineering firm, has received a contract to survey and design 2.5 miles of primary and secondary access roads to the Red Onion Prison site in Wise County. Construction of the $4 million project is to begin next spring.

\ Lin Chaff Public Relations and Advertising in Roanoke has been named to promote the opening of the Peebles department store at New River Valley Mall in Christiansburg on Sept. 16. The agency will handle advertising and public relations for the New River Valley store and help open stores in Statesville, N.C., and Waynesboro.
