PULASKI GIRL WINS STANDING LONG JUMP

Joselyn Travis of Pulaski won the national championship in the standing long jump for girls ages 9-10 at the Hershey's Youth Track and Field, held Aug. 15-18 at Hershey Park.

Travis jumped 7 feet, 2 inches. The leap was four inches better than any other competitor.

Travis became the third athlete from the town of Pulaski Parks and Recreation Department to win a national championship at the national youth track meet. Other winners from Pulaski were Perry Beverly in 1987 and Carson Graham in 1990. Both captured the boys 13-14 standing long jump.

To qualify for the national meet, Travis had to win the state meet and her performance had to be the best in the 10-state Southeastern Region. She earned the trip to Hershey Park with a jump of 7-7 at the state meet at the University of Virginia in July.

Only 400 youth nationwide reach the national finals. More than 1 million compete in the Hershey track program.
