PARTS FIRM OPTIONS WYTHE SITE

A Pennsylvania manufacturer of power-steering parts for trucks has taken a one-year option on an industrial shell building in Wythe County's industrial park.

Shepherd Power Steering of Hanover, Pa., would start with 15 to 20 employees - if it exercises its option - and potentially employ 100 workers eventually, said Jack Baumgardner, chairman of the Joint Industrial Development Authority of Wytheville, Rural Retreat and Wythe County.

"That ought to be good news to everybody in this room," he said at the authority's monthly meeting Thursday.

Wytheville Mayor Trent Crewe also addressed the group, elaborating on remarks he made at Monday night's Town Council meeting about communication problems between council and the authority.

"We got information from an industrial development prospect that was 180 degrees different from what we were getting from the IDA," Crewe said. "This wasn't the first time."

But he said problems between the two groups are being worked out and he did not want his remarks taken as criticism of any authority officials. "That's not what I was trying to do, and that is not what I think I did," he said.

The authority also set a goal of gaining 80 new jobs in the next calendar year. "I believe if you don't set a goal, you don't reach a goal," said Wytheville Community College President William Snyder, who made the motion. - Southwest bureau
