CATHOLIC OPENS WITH 26-16 WIN

Freshman P.J. Moyer ran for 188 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries, leading Roanoke Catholic to a 26-16 victory over Kenston Forest on Saturday at Victory Stadium in the football opener for both teams.

Kenston Forest led 16-13 at halftime, but Moyer scored on 83- and 1-yard runs in the second half.

The Celtics rolled up 278 yards rushing, while Kenston Forest was held to 132. Moyer opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 35-yard run, but Kenston Forest came back with a 5-yard touchdown run by Timmy Gray. After Gray threw a 47-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, Kenston Forest held a 16-6 lead.

The visitors' lead was cut to 16-13 later in the second quarter when the Celtics' Cameron Blount scored on a 35-yard pass from Mike Kolnok.

Roanoke Catholic's defense held Kenston Forest scoreless in the second half, and Moyer took over from there. Kenston Forest 8800-16 Roanoke Catholic 7667-26

Bland's Joe Cromer ran for a 65-yard touchdown in the second quarter to open the scoring, but Holston took the lead when Tom South hit Travis Gray with a 13-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and South ran for the two-point conversion.

\ Grundy 26, Carroll County 14: In Hillsville, Jason Lester ran for 154 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries as the Golden Wave overpowered the Cavaliers in a non-district opener Friday night.

Lester scored on runs of 45, 55 and 3 yards. Carroll County led 14-6 in the second quarter, but Grundy's defense stood up the rest of the way. Carroll County 8600-14 Grundy 6866-26
