PEPPER MACE CITED IN DEATH OF PRISONER

An autopsy found that pepper spray used by police to subdue a man contributed to his death, which touched off rioting in this town of 30,000.

Police arrested Angelo Robinson, 24, after a disturbance at a restaurant on July 11. They said he was transported to police headquarters and was unresponsive upon arrival. The rioting that followed left eight police officers, two firefighters and several residents injured. One store was burned to the ground and windows were smashed.

Robinson died of asphyxia caused by bronchial spasms that were precipitated by the pepper spray, said Lisa Flannagan, assistant state medical examiner.
