CANADA BANS FISHING IN PARTS OF ATLANTIC

Responding to a dwindling number of cod, a fixture of many American diets and the economic mainstay of eastern Canada, the Canadian government Tuesday closed large sections of its Atlantic waters to fishing, effective Tuesday night.

As many as 12,000 fishermen and fish-processing workers will lose their jobs as a result of Tuesday's action, which also reduced the allowable catch in other fishing sectors along Canada's Atlantic coast. Already, 25,000 people been thrown out of work by a crisis in Atlantic fishing, most of them in the impoverished province of Newfoundland.
