BIKE CLUB SCHEDULE

The New River Valley Bicycle Club has announced its schedule for September.

Beginning tonight and continuing every Wednesday this month will be Men's and Women's Social Rides. Rides begin at 6 p.m. at the Virginia Tech Chapel. The 10- to 15-mile ride will be decided upon by the participants. The emphasis will be on riding slowly and riding together while socializing. Call 951-7825.

A new feature this month are Sunday Easy Riders on Sept. 5, 12 and 19. These rides will begin at the Virginia Tech Chapel at 2 p.m. They will be at an easy 10 mph pace and about 10 miles in length. Then on Sept. 26, the Easy Riders will invade Clover Hollow. That 10-mile jaunt will begin at 2 p.m. at the Newport Recreation Center. Call 552-3548.

September is also the month for the Bridge-to-Bridge ride in Lenoir, N.C. The century (100-mile) ride features a lot of climbs, including the final two-mile segment to the top of Grandfather Mountain. There is a registration fee and rider support if needed. Call 951-7825.

Also, the club has four touring rides during the month:

On Saturday, it's the Elliston Loop. This is a 45-mile ride at a moderate pace on moderate terrain from Blacksburg to Elliston and return. Riders meet at the Virginia Tech Chapel at 8:30 a.m. Call 382-9125.

On Sept. 11, it's The Killer. This is a 100-mile mountainous ride. Riders meet at the New Castle Ranger Station at 8 a.m. Call 951-7618.

On Sept. 18, it's the Longshop Loop. This is an easy and easy-paced 23-mile ride from Blacksburg to Longshop and return. Riders meet at the Virginia Tech Chapel at 9 a.m. Call 951-7825.

On Sept. 25, it's the Picnic at the Peaks of Otter. This traditional club ride of 66 miles ends with a tough climb to the top of the beautiful peaks. Riders meet at the Virginia Tech Chapel at 9 a.m. For information as well as to arrange a ride back to Blacksburg and food for the picnic, call 552-4607.

Helmets are required. Minors must be accompanied by and have parental permission.
