WHO WILL FOLLOW IN SEMONES' FOOTSTEPS AT GLENVAR?

He may have been the most feared football player in the Pioneer District.

He ran for more than 5,000 yards in his high school career, and he led Glenvar to an 11-1 record (5-0 in the district) last year.

Now that Brandon Semones has graduated, the Highlanders have some pretty big shoes to fill. Or do they?

"We've felt all along that no one person ever made a team or program," Glenvar head coach Brian Hooker says. "This season will just be business as usual."

When the Highlanders get down to business, Semones won't be the only key player missing. Senior Kevin Keffer, a two-year starter at center and defensive tackle, developed a non-malignant brain tumor and can't play this year. That means Casey Mills, a junior tackle, will be the only returning starter on the offensive line.

No running back had more than 15 carries last year, but senior wide receivers David Robinson and Brad Melton, both 6-foot-4, will be ample targets for senior quarterback Mike Stanley.

Robinson, a first-team All Pioneer District selection in the secondary last year, senior Tim Carroll and sophomore Eric East lead a strong defensive backfield, and the linebackers should be solid.

"We want to uphold this tradition," Hooker says. "The guys feel like they've got something to prove."

Another team that feels it has something to prove is Parry McCluer (11-2, 4-1). The Fighting Blues made it to the state semifinals last year, but only two offensive starters return from that squad.

Head coach Bob Williams says his team could be in trouble.

"It's going to take a lot of hard work this year, and even then I'm not sure that'll be enough to get us back to where we were last year," he says.

Gone are four-year starting quarterback Mike Twitty, all-district running back Robbie Dickinson and All-Timesland offensive tackle John Clark. Senior Shaam Wheeler will be the starting tailback, but he'll run behind an offensive line with only one returning starter.

The Blues should be stronger on defense, where six starters are back. Senior Craig Floyd, who had 128 tackles last year, will be the unit's leader.

\ Bath County (2-8, 1-4) will run a single-wing offense featuring senior tailback Michael Edwards, junior fullback Billy Thomas and senior blocking back Timmy Tuning. The trio combined for almost 1,500 yards rushing last year, but they'll be running behind a line that has only one returning starter.

"It's as good a stable of running backs as I've ever been around," says Steve Isaacs, the Chargers' head coach.

Tuning is the leading returning tackler, and Edwards is a four-year starter in the secondary.

Covington (4-6, 3-2) will try to achieve a more balanced offense than it had last year. That means senior Corey Hunter, who returns at quarterback, will look to throw more than the eight passes per game he averaged in 1992.

Sophomore back Tom Luckett ran for 400 yards in '92. Junior linebacker Robert Jackson, who didn't play last year, and senior ends Roscie Martin and Chuck Wiley lead the defense.

James River (4-6, 2-3) has only 21 players on its squad.

The offense will be a question mark for the Knights. Senior Todd Washington, who will start at quarterback, saw only limited time at that position last year. None of the receivers has caught a ball on the varsity level, and the leading returning rusher, Tony Sparks, had only 160 yards.

Jeremy Hendrix is the leading returning tackler for the Knights, and Washington had three interceptions at safety last year.

Craig County (1-9, 0-5) also has a numbers problem. The Rockets have 18 players on their squad this year.

Junior quarterback Robbie Huffman returns, and he'll likely throw the ball about 20 times a game. The offensive line, which had problems protecting Huffman last year, has only one returning starter.

The defense is led by Christopher Peters, an all-district selection in the secondary last year. He'll play as an outside linebacker this year. Senior outside linebacker Robert Eakin is the top returning tackler.

\ PROJECTED FINISH: 1, Parry McCluer; 2, Glenvar; 3, Bath County; 4, Covington; 5, James River; 6, Craig County.
