CRAIG COUNTY SCHOOLS ADDS SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

Craig County will take another step toward providing for all of its own educational needs when the county's two schools open Sept. 7.

Five emotionally disturbed students who have been attending special-education classes in Roanoke County will be closer to their homes.

A special-education teacher is being added to the high school faculty to teach the five students, said Principal Brian A. Green.

The Craig County School Board voted this month to offer classes for the five students. Assistant Superintendent Donald Ford said the system ultimately "would like to serve all of our special-education students in Craig."

Eight students will still travel to specialized classes, seven going to Roanoke County and one to Alleghany County.

Additionally, Ford said, Craig will have three gifted students attend the Governor's School in Roanoke.

Green said the high school is adding four new electives - nursing assistant, auto mechanics, cabinetmaking and computer science.

The computer science course was offered previously, Green said, but had to be dropped because of a scheduling conflict. The class will be offered as part of the math program and will be taught by a teacher already on staff.

The major change at McCleary Elementary is the addition of two mobile buildings to ease classroom crowding.

Principal Pete Controvich said the mobile buildings will provide four classrooms to be used by sixth- and seventh-grade students.

School officials do not expect any other big changes in the county's school operation this year. Enrollment is expected to be about the same as the previous term, and the schools will have about the same number of teachers.

No bus routes are being added. Ford said bus schedules will stay about the same as they have been in the past few years.
