CAUSE OF BOAT FIRE UNDER INVESTIGATION

Franklin County authorities worked Thursday to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed five boats, damaged two others and gutted covered boat slips at Smith Mountain Lake on Wednesday.

Deputy Fire Marshal Ben Cook said the blaze apparently broke out shortly before 6 p.m. in a boat that had been docked at the Waterfront subdivision for about an hour. The blaze quickly engulfed the covered boat dock and spread.

Cook estimated damage at $200,000.

Franklin County authorities also were investigating a second fire Wednesday at an unoccupied house in the Long Island Estates subdivision at the lake. Cook said Thursday afternoon that he had no details on that fire.
