EMORY & HENRY GETS $4.9 MILLION DONATION

Emory & Henry College will get a $4.9 million challenge grant from the Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation of Princeton, N.J., representing the largest donation of its kind in the college's 150-year history.

The program provides financial aid and community-service opportunities to selected students who seek to get an education and serve others.

Bonner Scholarships go to students otherwise unable to afford college. Eligibility is limited to students in the upper 40 percent of their high school classes.

The challenge part is that colleges chosen for Bonner grants must raise $1 million for the program themselves.

President Thomas R. Morris said Emory & Henry has started working on that.
