STAUNTON RIVER OPENS WITH WIN OVER ALTAVISTA

Staunton River dominated the rebounding to defeat host Altavista 48-34 in a season-opening Seminole District girls' basketball game Thursday night.

Charity Bryant and Kim English grabbed 18 rebounds each, Courtney Bryant added 12 and Dana Bowles 10. Bryant also was the leading scorer with 14, followed by English with 12 and Herd with 11.

Staunton River (1-0) played without Tanya Nelms, an all-district selection last year and leading scorer for the Golden Eagles the past two seasons. Nelms sprained an ankle and is expected to miss the first few weeks of the season.

Brooke Mitchell scored 16 points, including two 3-pointers, to pace Altavista (0-1).

Rocky Gap 38

HILLSVILLE - Sheil Bunn scored 11 points and Jennifer Watkins contributed seven rebounds and four steals as the Cavaliers (2-0) defeated the Eagles in the Carroll County tipoff tournament.

Nancy Tupper led Rocky Gap (0-2) with 11 points.

In the first game, Graham pounded Pocahontas 49-23.

BEDFORD - Felicia Miller scored 16 points and Kellea Whorley added 14 as the Minutemen beat Rustburg in a Pioneer District season opener.

Liberty scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to put away the game. The Minutemen were led by point-guard Amy Baxter, who had nine steals and eight assists.

Felicia Harris led Rustburg with eight points.
