HOLLINS HIRES 2-SPORT COACH

Kellie Kennedy, a 1990 graduate of the University of North Carolina, is the new soccer and basketball coach at Hollins College.

Kennedy, most recently a graduate assistant coach at North Carolina- Wilmington, succeeds Laura Williges as basketball coach. Williges resigned in early August to take an assistant's job at Slippery Rock.

"It did cause me a few sleepless nights, but the response was really positive," said Linda Calkins, the Hollins athletic director. "I was very pleased."

Calkins said she received 60 or 70 applications and more candidates called.

Last year, Hollins' basketball team was 8-10 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference - its best finish in conference play - and 12-12 overall.

In other college sports news:

Jane Flynn, who guided Penn State to the equestrian national championship in 1989, has been hired as director of riding at Ferrum College. She is joined by former Nittany Lions assistant Idella Krepelka, who will be Ferrum's new stable manager.

Flynn has served in several capacities for the International Horse Show Association, including national secretary and director at large. Flynn and Krepelka are Penn State graduates.

Virginia Commonwealth's Eugene Kissourine, who averaged six points and 5.3 rebounds last season, has left school to play pro basketball in Italy.

Kissourine, a 6-foot-9, 215-pound native of St. Petersburg, Russia, started 23 of 30 games for the Rams last season. He had two years of eligibility remaining with the Metro Conference school.

"I know the offer was for more than $80,000, because he rejected that much from them," coach Sonny Smith said Thursday. "He had told us they'd been in contact with him, but he left without telling us."
