HIGHLANDERS START SEASON WITH OVERTIME VICTORY

Glenvar made seven of 10 free throws in overtime to defeat host Northside in a non-district girls' basketball game Thursday night.

The Highlanders' Toree Morris hit a 3-pointer with 2.5 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime. Morris led all scorers with 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Marilea Hale added 13 points for Glenvar.

Shannon Yopp led Northside with 20 points.

Martinsville 57

Cathy Smith scored 12 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter as host William Byrd shot by Martinsville in a season-opening, non-district game.

The Terriers trailed 18-2 after the first quarter, but outscored the Bulldogs 17-9 in the second to take a 29-27 halftime lead. Led by Smith, Byrd outscored Martinsville 20-8 in the final quarter to seal the victory.

Jaclyn Banks added 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Terriers, who shot 75 percent from the free-throw line.

Keenya Hairston scored 20 and Tresita Holland added 18 to lead the Bulldogs.

Shellie Johnson scored 15 points and Michelle Brown added eight points off the bench as the host Spartans edged Radford in the opener for both teams.

Cathy Richardson and Charlee Taylor led the Bobcats with eight points each.
