OBIT-DOWDY, ELSIE H.
DOWDY, Elsie H., 97, of Friendship Manor, Roanoke, died Wednesday, August
25, 1993. She was born September 9, 1895, in Glade Hill, the daughter of
Edward and Mary LaPrade Hatchett. She was married in 1914 to Rufus John Dowdy
of Rocky Mount, who died in 1963. She was also predeceased by her daughter,
Elsie Dowdy Jeter in 1976, and by her son, the Rev. R. Edward Dowdy in 1979.
Since 1918, Mrs. Dowdy had been a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Roanoke,
where she was active in the Dorcas Class, and taught Sunday School for many
years. She was a member of the Roanoke Garden Club and the Eastern Star. A
faithful daughter-in-law, Harriet B. Dowdy, had looked after Mrs. Dowdy since
the Rev. Dowdy's death. She is now teaching English at the International Lay
Academy of the Baptists in Budapest, Hungary. In addition to her
daughter-in-law, Mrs. Dowdy is survived by four granddaughters, Harriet Dowdy
Hirschy, Markesan, Wis., Joyce LaPrade Dowdy Utroske, Billings, Mont., Ellen
Jeter Walker, Clarksville, Md., Mary Elizabeth Jeter Harvey, Malibu, Calif.;
one niece, Edith Nunnally Hall, Richmond; seven great-grandchildren; several
great-nieces and nephews. Mrs. Dowdy was buried in the family plot at
Evergreen Burial Park, Monday, August 30, 1993. A memorial service will be
conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, September 4, 1993, in the Chapel of Calvary Baptist
Church by the Rev. Dennis Herman and Dr. Harry Y. Gamble. In lieu of flowers,
the family requests that memorials be made to the Capital Improvement Program
of Calvary Baptist Church. Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke.
