PLENTY TO CELEBRATE AT CHURCHES IN SEPT.

Several area churches are celebrating anniversaries and homecomings this month:

\ ALLEGHANY CHURCH OF CHRIST, 2095 N. Franklin St., Christiansburg, will be marking its 157th anniversary with a homecoming and a revival Sept. 12-17.

On Sept. 12, Sunday school will start at 10 a.m. and morning worship at 11.

A dinner on the grounds will follow the morning worship.

Revival services with Jack Hyder, a former pastor, will be held Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. and Sept. 13-17 at 7:30 each evening.

Hyder also will conduct the homecoming service.

\ SUNNYSIDE PENTECOSTAL HOLINESS CHURCH will observe the first anniversary in its new sanctuary Sunday.

\ GARBER CHAPEL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, U.S. 11 off Interstate 81, Exit 118, Christiansburg, will celebrate homecoming Sept. 12.

The Rev. Raymond S. Kelley will speak at the 11 a.m. worship service. Lunch will be served at 12:15 p.m., and Gold Rush, a bluegrass-gospel group from Giles County, will perform at 1 p.m.

\ HARVEST BAPTIST CHURCH, 201 Lucas Drive, Blacksburg, will celebrate its 10th anniversary Sept. 18-19.

As part of the celebration, Dr. Henry M. Morris, founder and president of the Institute of Creation Research, will make two presentations on the validity of scientific creationism Sept. 18.

At 9:30 a.m., Morris will speak on "Evolution: Fact or Fiction?" At 10:45 a.m. he'll talk on "Dinosaurs and the Deluge."

Church volunteers recently renovated the two-story house - between the church and the Kroger supermarket - which once housed the Chamber of Commerce.

The church's youth programs outgrew the existing facilities.

\ The CHRISTIANSBURG PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH youth groups will participate in "The Great Sleepout of '93" Friday at the Rescue Mission in Roanoke. They'll join young people from other churches in the Roanoke Valley for this fund-raiser, which will be to endow a bed at the homeless shelter. The event is sponsored by The Lifeline Foundation.

Participants will collect sponsor pledges and will sleep out in the Rescue Mission parking lot overnight. All gifts are tax-deductible.

Those making the trip should meet at the church Friday at 6 p.m. for the trip to Roanoke for dinner and the sleepout. The group will return the next morning at 7.

\ BIBLE STUDY FELLOWSHIP will study the Gospel of Matthew this year. A daytime group will meet Wednesdays, starting Sept. 15, 9:10-10:15 a.m., at First Wesleyan Church, Giles Road, Blacksburg. There's also a program for pre-school children (2 to 5 years old) of class members. Please register children before they attend.

An evening Bible Study Fellowship class will meet Mondays starting Sept. 13, 7:30 p.m., at Blacksburg United Methodist Church, Church Street. There is no children's class.

\ The annual CROP WALK in Radford is set for Oct. 17, sponsored by the Radford-Fairlawn Ministerial Association. Volunteer walkers get pledges throughout the community to raise money to help alleviate world hunger through Church World Service programs.

Twenty-five percent of the amount raised during Radford's 6.2-mile trek will be divided among the Women's Resource Center, Radford-Fairlawn Daily Bread and the Radford Food Pantry.

The hike starts Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Dedmon Center at Radford University.

\ CHRISTIANSBURG UNITED CHRISTIAN AID is seeking clothing for needy Montgomery County children in kindergarten through high school. The group especially needs cool-weather jackets, jeans and tops in smaller sizes and husky sizes.

Donate clothing in good condition, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 220 W. Main St., next to Duncan's Texaco. Go in the covered side door and down one flight. Place clothing in the box next to the stairs.

\ Church names in the news:

\ DIANE WORRINGHAM of Christiansburg - a member of Grove United Methodist Church in Radford - has been commissioned a "US-2" by the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries. She was one of 40 young adults commissioned nationally. Participants in the US-2 program undertake a two-year term of Christian service and leadership development in the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. US-2s get food, housing and a stipend for their service.

A 1993 graduate of James Madison University, Worringham has been assigned as a community developer with the Neighborhood Services Organization in Oklahoma City, where she'll work with the homeless.

She's the daughter of Richard and Shannon Worringham.

\ The REV. GORDON WOOLARD will be formally installed as the new pastor at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, 416 Alleghany St., Blacksburg, on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the church. He succeeds the Rev. Don Clements.

Most recently, Woolard spent several years in Belgium working with The International Fellowship of Evangelical Students, which is better-known in the U.S. as the Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship. He hopes to continue his ministry with students in the New River Valley.

Woolard, 42, is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and the Westminster Seminary in Philadelphia. He's married and the father of four.

\ The REV. RICHARD BETHUNE has joined the staff of Blacksburg United Methodist Church, where his primary duties will be in the area of visitation.

Bethune recently retired after 10 years as pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Pulaski. He also had held pastorates in Victoria, Danville and Front Royal.

His wife, Virginia Redhead Bethune, has been the organist at Blacksburg Methodist since 1989.

\ The REV. JOEL P. WRIGHT has taken over as interim pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Pulaski. Wright, who is from Richmond, has just completed work on his doctorate degree at the Presbyterian School of Christian Education. He has pastored churches in Iowa and California.
