DUBLIN POLICE CHIEF ON JOB TUESDAY

Russell Gwaltney will start his new job Tuesday as Dublin's police chief.

The post has been vacant since May, when Mayor Benny Keister declined to reappoint Jim McKinney. McKinney had been chief since mid-1980 and a Police Department member since 1976.

Gwaltney, who has been with the Police Department in his native Salem, was sworn in at Dublin on Thursday and has met with members of the Dublin department. He said he would be seeking their views on department policies before making any changes.

He and his wife live near Dublin.
