FRANKLIN SKID GROWS WITH LOSS

George Washington-Danville displayed a defiantly dull performance Friday night but still managed to pound Franklin County 30-0 in a non-district opener for both teams.

"I wasn't really pleased," said GW coach Ed Martin. "They took away our outside game, but just gave us the inside game. We just weren't very sharp."

GW, which switched to a wishbone offense this year, rushed for 364 yards.

The team was led by senior back Kevin Hogue who had 140 yards on 12 carries, all in the first half. Hogue sprained his ankle and did not return after halftime.

Theomone Brooks, GW's second leading rusher with 56 yards on five carries, was also injured in the first half. Brooks suffered a groin injury.

Martin said he was not sure if the pair would miss any starts.

"We switched to the wishbone because we felt we had a lot of strong backs and a lot of speed," Martin said. "And then two of our backs got hurt tonight."

A botched Franklin County punt opened the scoring in the first quarter. Steve McGhee mishandled a bad snap, then batted it out of the end zone, resulting in a GW safety.

GW added two touchdowns in the quarter. Senior quarterback Larry Moore, who finished with 40 yards rushing, scored from 5 yards with 4:32 left to make it 9-0.

Moore, a first-team All-Western District selection last year, completed three of eight passes, including a short shuttle pass to Brooks with 1:30 left in the quarter to put GW up 16-0.

There weren't too many highlights for Franklin County, which extended its losing streak to 19 games, the longest current skid in Group AAA. The Eagles managed only 53 yards rushing and 19 passing.

"We just played sloppy," Franklin County coach Horace Green said. "They had a good game plan and we couldn't stop it.

"The bright spot was that the kids didn't quit. I thought the offensive line blocked well at times and I thought Stacey [Helms] ran hard. We just got beat by a good football team."

Helms, a senior tailback, led Franklin County's offensive effort with 52 yards on 15 carries.

"The little mistakes hurt us," Helms said. "We'd have some big plays and then penalties would bring us back."

Seventy-two yards worth of penalties, to be exact. But that number paled next to GW's 120 yards on 15 penalties.

"We made a lot of first-game mistakes," Martin said. "We had played so well in scrimmages . . . but this is a real game situation and that's different."

GW struck again 8:46 into the third quarter when LaParker Robertson capped a 56-yard drive with a 16-yard touchdown run.

Moore accounted for the final margin with a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter. \
