A FRESH START FOR BOTETOURT

It's out with the old and in with the new at Lord Botetourt.

Senior Chris Deweese takes over the reigns of quarterback from the departed Tommy Hayslett, Rocky Lark is the fullback after Matt Janes graduated last year, and Andy Ward is in his first season as the coach of the Cavaliers.

All of these faces made positive contributions as Lord Botetourt defeated Lynchburg Christian 20-8 in a non-district game Friday night at Lord Botetourt.

The Cavaliers jumped on the scoreboard first by taking advantage of a poor punt by the Bulldogs' David Horsley. Lord Botetourt took possession at the Bulldog 34-yard line, and then scored nine plays later on a Deweese 11 yard pass to tight end Jeff Cronise, who pulled the ball away from three defenders. The extra point was missed, but the Cavaliers led 6-0.

"Jeff is probably my favorite receiver because he is so big,"Deweese said. "I just laid it up there so that he could take advantage of his height."

The Cavaliers struck again late in the second quarter by taking advantage of another Bulldog mistake. After Chad Sayers recovered a fumble by Bulldog quarterback Landon Elder, the Cavaliers marched 43 yards in nine plays and scored on Lark's six yard run.

"First-half mistakes simply killed us," said Bulldog coach Scott Allen. "We had them stopped and then we commit a penalty to give them a first down. They did a great job of taking advantage of our mistakes."

The Bulldogs managed to cut the lead to 12-8 with less than four minutes to go in the game on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Elder to running back Todd Windsor. The pass finished a 20 play drive which ate up almost nine minutes.

LCA had one last chance to win after forcing the Cavaliers to punt on their next possession, but Elder's pass was intercepted by Deweese, who took it 27 yards for the touchdown to put the game out of reach.

"I thought our seniors did a great job of keeping us in the game, especially after they scored," said Lord Botetourt coach Andy Ward. "Chris did everything well. He threw well, ran well, and that return was great."

Ward added that the win was a great start in turning around the Cavalier program.

"It's going to take some time, but hopefully this game will keep us going in the right direction." \
