STAUNTON RIVER FALLS

Bilal Abdullah's 1-yard run with 8 minutes, 2 seconds to play and a 2-point conversion run by Dexter Woodruff rallied Altavista to a 15-12 season-opening victory over Staunton River on Friday night in the Seminole District.

Staunton River, rocked by Shaun Pannell's 64-yard kickoff return to open the game, rallied to take a 12-7 lead on Dwight Orange's 4-yard touchdown run and a 30-yard scoring run by Jeff English.

English finished with 100 yards on 11 carries for Staunton River. \

Liberty 13

RUSTBURG - The Red Devils (1-0) had the last word in a seesaw scoring battle to edge the Minutemen (0-1) in the Seminole District.

Quarterback Terry Overstreet passed for 136 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown to Gregg Reynolds, and Liberty got a 6-yard TD run from Greg Richie.

UNION, W.Va. - The hosts used a 172-yard rushing attack to defeat the Rockets in a non-district game.

The Rockets trailed 12-0 halfway through the fourth quarter, but quarterback Robbie Huffman scored on a 16-yard run.

The Rockets stopped Union on the goal line with three minutes left in the game, but after Craig drove to Union's 36-yard line in the last minute, Huffman threw his second interception of the game. \
