ALLEGHANY GUNS DOWN CHRISTIANSBURG 57-41

And the defense rested.

In a non-district football opener that was very offensive, visiting Alleghany outscored Christiansburg 57-41, as running back David Cummings rushed for 183 yards on only 10 carries. Cummings scored twice, including a 69-yard reception from quarterback David Dixon.

The game included 14 touchdowns, six turnovers - including two fumble recoveries returned for scores - and only four punts. Alleghany finished with 385 total yards, compared to 354 for the Blue Demons.

Dixon ran for two touchdowns and passed for one to lead the Mountaineers. Christiansburg quarterback Mischa Alexander also threw a pair of scoring passes. Cummings had two touchdowns for the winners, while Kareem Koonce had two long-distance touchdowns for the Demons.

Andre Beasley's 104 yards, on 15 carries, paced Christiansburg. \

BUENA VISTA - Craig Floyd's 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter lifted the Fighting Blues to a non-district victory over the Dragons in the opener for both teams.

Parry McCluer limited William Monroe to 108 yards and one first down. The Blues managed just 220 yards.

Johnson Wheeler carried 19 times for 88 yards and scored Parry McCluer's first touchdown on a 23-yard run in the first quarter.

David Hutchinson rushed for 98 yards and scored William Monroe's only touchdown on a 53-yard dash.

RINER - Kevin Burton ran for three touchdowns and Chris Bass threw for one as the Indians opened their season by whipping the Eagles in a non-district matchup.

Bass started the scoring with a 12-yard pass to Seth Taylor, then Burton scored the next three touchdowns to give the Indians a 28-0 lead. Jason Childers ended the first-half scoring and made it 35-0 with a 74-yard run.

Alleghany (N.C.) 0

SPARTA, N.C. - Tailback Jason Byrd rushed 12 times for 126 yards and two touchdowns to power the Blue Devils to the non-district victory over the Trojans.

Byrd scored on runs of 4 and 6 yards. The first TD capped a 93-yard drive.

Grayson County's defense yielded only 76 yards.

STUARTS DRAFT - Billy Thomas accounted for all the scoring with his feet and his arm as the Chargers opened their season with a non-district victory over the Cougars.

Thomas broke open a scoreless game in the third quarter with a 10-yard touchdown run, then threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Timmy Tuning in the fourth quarter.

Bath County also was led by running backs Jamie Carroll and Michael Edwards, who combined for 135 yards on 25 carries.

Stuarts Draft missed a pair of field-goal attempts in the first half.

\ Fort Chiswell

George Wythe

George Wythe's game against Fort Chiswell was postponed until 10 a.m. today at Fort Chiswell because a transformer blew up during Friday's game.

George Wythe was leading 14-0 with 52 seconds left in the second quarter when the game was called. Chris Dickinson scored on an 8-yard run in the first quarter, and Jeff Bourne scored on a 15-yard run in the second period.

Fort Chiswell lost four fumbles. When the game resumes, George Wythe will have the ball on Fort Chiswell's 45-yard line.
