ROADWATCH

Highway and street projects scheduled this week by localities and the Virginia Department of Transportation:

ROANOKE

Fifth Street Bridge construction - A new four-lane bridge is being built between Salem and Gilmer avenues over Norfolk Southern tracks. The existing bridge will be closed until next summer. Elm Avenue (Virginia 24) bridge over Interstate 581 - Repairs are continuing from 7 p.m.-7 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from 7 p.m. Fridays through 7 a.m. Mondays. During the work, one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction. The job is estimated to be completed in September. Peters Creek Road - Paving and milling of the intersection with Cove Road and a portion of Peters Creek north of Melrose Avenue. Work begins about 8 a.m. and continues until early evening. The roads will remain open, but motorists should expect congestion and delays.

\ ROANOKE COUNTY U.S. 11/460 bridge - At the Montgomery County line, the bridge over the Roanoke River and Norfolk Southern tracks is under repair. Two-way traffic will be maintained on the westbound lane while repairs are being performed on the eastbound side. Speed limit is reduced to 45 mph. Vehicles wider than 9 feet are prohibited. Work to replace the bridge's deck will last until spring. Hunting Hills subdivision improvements - Work will begin Monday on Virginia 1285, 1290, 1291, 1292, 1293, 1294 and 1943 on new drainage facilities, grading and new surfaces. Work is expected to last until spring. \ BOTETOURT COUNTY Virginia 605 reconstruction - In Cloverdale, about 1.4 miles of the road - between Virginia 601 in Roanoke County and Virginia 654 in Botetourt County - is being repaved. A one-lane bridge will be replaced with a box culvert. Work is expected to last until spring.

\ BEDFORD Virginia 122 reconstruction - About 0.4 mile - from a half-mile north of the intersection of Orange Street to Longwood Avenue - of the road will be repaved, and new traffic signals will be installed. Work will continue through the end of the year.

\ BEDFORD COUNTY Virginia 43 bridge weight-limit reduction - The weight limit for the bridge on Virginia 43 North, 6.1 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway, has been reduced from 14 tons to 10 tons. The restriction will remain in effect until repairs are completed. Signs are posted.

\ FRANKLIN COUNTY Virginia 40 paving - Both lanes, from the east corporate limits of Rocky Mount to Hodgesville, between U.S. 220 and Virginia 122, are being paved. Motorists should expect delays.
