SPIDERS SCORE 28 IN 3RD QUARTER, OVERTAKE KEYDETS

VMI just couldn't seem to hold on to the football on Saturday.

The Keydets saw a 14-10 halftime lead disappear behind four fumbles, two of them recovered by Richmond, as the Spiders scored 28 third-quarter points to win the non-conference game 38-14.

"What we talked about all preseason is that we have to play turnover-free football, and not self-destruct," VMI head coach Jim Shuck said. "I give Richmond credit. They converted and made the plays, and we didn't. You can't give a good team only 15-20 yards to make a touchdown."

Uly Scott's 2-yard touchdown run ignited the second half for the Spiders. Quarterback Greg Lilly played three quarters, completing 12 of 19 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns.

Scott, Antoine Lee, Michael Henderson and Price Williams each scored a touchdown in the third quarter to help lead the Spiders' second-half rally.

"We just kind of self-destructed at the end of the game," Shuck said.

Rob Boothes had a first-quarter touchdown on a 55-yard pass from Lilly, and Kevin Longacre kicked a 26-yard field goal to account for the Spiders' first-half points.

VMI's Rob Clark opened the scoring, returning a blocked punt 4 yards for a touchdown, and quarterback Spike Johnson's 1-yard touchdown run gave the Keydets a 14-10 edge.

Johnson was 6-for-21 passing for 41 yards and two interceptions.

Linebacker Jeff Edminston had nine unassisted tackles and four assists as Richmond limited VMI's wishbone attack to 150 yards rushing, nearly all in the final quarter.

Richmond had 395 total yards while holding VMI to 212. \
