SPIRITS' SMITH REPEATS AS CAROLINA LEAGUE MVP

Slugger Bubba Smith of the Winston-Salem Spirits became the first player in Carolina League history to win consecutive Most Valuable Player awards after a vote of each team's manager, general manager and media representative.

Smith, chosen to the team as a designated hitter, is the only player to win the MVP twice. He entered the last three games of the season leading the league with 27 home runs, was tied for third in batting average (.303) and was fourth in runs batted in with 80.

Julian Tavarez, who rose all the way from the Class A Carolina League's Kinston Indians to the Cleveland Indians this season, was voted the pitcher of the year. Tavarez went 11-5 with a 2.42 ERA in Kinston.

Dave Keller of Kinston and Pete Mackanin of the Frederick Keys were selected co-managers of the year.

Among the players selected was former Ferrum College standout Eric Owens, who was tapped at shortstop. Owens hit .271 with 10 home runs and 62 RBI for Winston-Salem.
